Day 18: Salzburg

Willkommen in Salzburg!  That's the castle we visited.

We started our day at 6:30am this morning to catch a 7:40am train from Vienna.  The train ride was wonderful.  While I enjoyed the Tuscany vineyards of Italy, I think I might prefer the vast farms with the Alpine backdrop.  We didn't really know what we were going to do when we got here so we started out by walking around and figured we should head towards the castle on top of the hill.  We passed through the center of town and bought a few things including Mozart balls, a local candy consisting of dark chocolate, nougat, and pistachio.  We also learned that Salzburg is where The Sound of Music is set and it is also the birthplace of Mozart (hence the candy).  And it is known for it's salt mines, hence the name Salzburg.  The Festung (fortress) Hohensalzburg had a lot of cool history that we didn't know about and a marionette doll museum among other interesting galleries.  After the castle/fortress we had lunch at the grocery store.  I got a salad for less than two euro and Brendan saw 0.5L of beer for 41 cents!  But everything else here is really expensive, i.e. key chains for 7.50.  The weather has warmed up by the way!  It, thankfully, wasn't two degrees (Celsius) out today.  Other than that we mostly just walked around, went inside (yet another) Cathedral, walked through the gardens, and explored the town!  Salzburg is awesome!  I think I probably liked it more than Vienna hah.  On to Munich--thanks for reading :)
