Island of Burano
The charm has not worn off. Brendan and I have only just left Venice and quite frankly, I miss it a little. I almost wish we could've stayed longer but I am looking forward to Vienna and the rest of Europe far too much! Today was pretty good though, despite the rain. We woke up at 9:30am (since we'd lacked so much sleep the night before) and got ready to leave our hostel. By eleven we were out roaming the walkways once again before boarding a tour bus at 2:30pm. The tour bus took us to a few islands close to Venice: Torcello, Burano, and Murano. It drizzled again today but that certainly didn't spoil our trip.
Our first stop was Murano where we stepped inside a glass factory to see how they make the impressive glassware found in Venice. A gentleman made a vase and beautiful horse in a matter of minutes and made it look so easy. I was impressed. Our second stop was Burano which is known for the colorful fishermen's homes. If someone suggested to me that they make a bunch of, essentially, townhouses and paint them all different colors of the rainbow I would say that it would probably look pretty damn ugly. But these were anything but ugly. The colors were so vibrant and well kept and mixed beautifully with the colorful boats in the canals that separated them. It was a great little town! Our last stop was Torcello where we found a church that dated back to around 1000 A.D. The island only had 15 residences so it wasn't terribly busy but it was nice.
By the time we returned to Venice the rain had cleared up a bit and Brendan and I headed back to the train station to pick up our bags (we had left them there for the day) and to have some dinner before boarding the overnight train to Austria. 11 hours later and we will be in Vienna! I was sad to miss such a beautiful sunset--or rather to have watched it from the train platform--but I will just have to return to Venice some other day! A German speaking family has joined us. I understood them when they were counting to three, explaining to a gentleman that they had three seats and that he was in the wrong compartment. But since then I haven't understood a single thing they've said. The father is deaf so they also know sign language. Should be a good trip. Thanks for reading once agian--check back soon!
An attempt at a panorama of the Venetian coast.
This is one of Brendan's photos from yesterday that came out really well. If you flip it upside down you can hardly tell it's a reflection!
This is also from yesterday when Brendan and I rode the water bus.

Still charmed.
